Channel coding in communication networks: from theory to turbocodes - Alain Glavieux

John Wiley and Sons, 2007 - Computers - 418 pages
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the subject of channel coding. It starts with a description of information theory, focusing on the quantitative measurement of information and introducing two fundamental theorems on source and channel coding. The basics of channel coding in two chapters, block codes and convolutional codes, are then discussed, and for these the authors introduce weighted input and output decoding algorithms and recursive systematic convolutional codes, which are used in the rest of the book. Trellis coded modulations, which have their primary applications in high spectral efficiency transmissions, are then covered, before the discussion moves on to an advanced coding technique called turbocoding. These codes, invented in the 1990s by C. Berrou and A. Glavieux, show exceptional performance. The differences between convolutional turbocodes and block turbocodes are outlined, and for each family, the authors present the coding and decoding techniques, together with their performances. The book concludes with a chapter on the implementation of turbocodes in circuits. As such, anyone involved in the areas of channel coding and error correcting coding will find this book to be of invaluable assistance.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

The Kite Runner is a novel by Khaled Hosseini. Published in 2003 by Riverhead Books, it is Hosseini's first novel, and was adapted into a film of the same name in 2007.
The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a young boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who befriends Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.

Basic Electronics Components and Hardware-II TEM-2 CFS

The Information Technology and Telecom sectors have suddenly opened up avenues, which require a very large specially trained manpower. These sectors are highly dynamic and need training and re-training of manpower at a rapid rate. The growing gap of requirement of the industry and its fulfilment has created a challenging situation before manpower training institutes of the country. To meet this challenge most effectively, Centre for Electronics Design and Technology of India (CEDTI) has launched its nation-wide franchising scheme.Centre for Electronics Design and Technology of India (CEDTI) is an Autonomous Scientific Society under the Govt. of India, Department of Electronics with its Headquarters at New Delhi. It operates seven centres located at Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Mohali, Jammu and Tezpur. The scheme will be implemented and coordinated by these centres.
The scheme endeavours to promote high quality computer and information technology education in the
country at an affordable cost while ensuring uniform standards in order to build a national resource of trained manpower. Low course fees will make this education available to people in relatively small, semi urban and rural areas. State-of-the-art training will be provided keeping in view the existing and emerging needs of the industrial and Govt. sectors. The examinations will be conducted by CEDTI and certificates will also be awarded by CEDTI.
The scheme will be operated through all the seven centres of CEDTI. The CEDTI functions under the overall control and guidance of the Governing Council with Secretary, Department of Electronics as its Chairman. The members of the council are drawn from scientific, government and industrial sectors. The Centres have separate executive committees headed by Director General, CEDTI. The members of these committees are from academic/professional institutes, state governments, industry and department of electronics.
CEDTI is a quality conscious organisation and has taken steps to formally get recognition of the quality and standards in various activities. CEDTI, Mohali was granted the prestigious ISO 9002 certificate in 1997. The other centres have taken steps to obtain the certification as early as possible. This quality consciousness will assist CEDTI in globalizing some of its activities. In keeping with its philosophy of ‘Quality in every Activity’, CEDTI will endeavour to impart state of the art – computer and IT training through its franchising scheme.

A VHDL Primer - Jayaram Bhasker(American Telephone and Telegraph Company Bell Laboratories)

VHDL is a hardware description language that can be used to model a digital system. It contains elements that can be used to describe the behavior or structure of the digital system, with the provision for specifying its timing explicitly. The language provides support for modeling the system hierarchically and also supports top-down and bottom-up design methodologies. The system and its subsystems can be described at any level of abstraction ranging from the architecture level to gate level. Precise simulation semantics are associated with all the language constructs, and therefore, models written in this language can be verified using a VHDL simulator.
The aim of this book is to introduce the VHDL language to the reader at the beginner's level. No prior knowledge of the language is required. The reader is, however, assumed to have some knowledge of a high-level programming language, like C or Pascal, and a basic understanding of hardware design. This text is intended for both software and hardware designers interested in learning VHDL with no specific emphasis being placed on either discipline.
VHDL is a large and verbose language with many complex constructs that have complex semantic meanings and is difficult to understand initially (VHDL is often quoted to be an acronym for Very Hard Description Language). However, it is possible to quickly understand a subset of VHDL which is both simple and easy to use. The emphasis of this text is on presenting this set of simple and commonly used features of the language so that the reader can start writing models in VHDL. These features are powerful enough to be able to model designs of large degrees of complexity.
This book is not intended to replace the IEEE Standard VHDL Language Reference Manual, the official language guide, but to complement it by explaining the complex constructs of the language using an example-based approach. Emphasis is placed on providing illustrative examples that explain the different formulations of the language constructs and their semantics. The complete syntax of language constructs is often not described, instead, the most common usage of these constructs are presented. Syntax for constructs is written in a self-explanatory fashion rather than through the use of formal terminology (the Backus-Naur Form) that is used in the Language Reference Manual. This text does not cover the entire language but concentrates on the most useful aspects.
